Veneer Matching
-

Veneer is stored in the exact sequence it was sliced from the log. Before it’s laid up, the designer or millworker must decide which veneer matching method to use—each produces a unique look. The right match depends on your application, the species of veneer, and the effect you want to achieve. Talk to us if you have any questions about the right match for your project. We’re happy to help.

Slip match
Consecutive leaves of veneer are slid or “slipped” across each other side by side to create a faces that have a repetitive grain pattern and no grain match at the joint. Slip matching is common in the cabinet industry, systems furniture, and high-volume door manufacturing.

Reverse slip match
Alternating leaves of veneer are turned end-for-end to create an alternating grain pattern that breaks up the “marching” pattern created by the slip match. Reverse slip matches balance veneer, having a whip of grain at one end of the pattern.

Book match
Consecutive leaves of veneer are opened like a book, creating a mirror image of the previous leaf. This is the most common matching technique. It creates a symmetrical pattern accentuating the wood’s grain, figure, and other decorative characteristics.

Book & butt match
Two consecutive leaves of veneer are book matched and then following two leaves are flipped or “butted” to create a 4-piece book and butt match. Often used with burls and crotches because of the characteristic small size leaves, this method creates beautiful patterns accentuating the swirly grains and irregular characteristics. Book and butt matching is also used when the panel length exceeds the length of the leaves.
