Tech Corner:

How you slice it- Flat cut veneer

How you slice a log makes a big difference in the look of veneer. Take a single log, cut it five different ways, and you’ll end up with five distinctly different looking sheets of veneer. You can usually recognize Flat cut veneer, like the maple sample shown in this issue, by the beautiful cathedral or loop grain pattern it produces. Cut on the quarter, this same log would show a straight grain throughout. To the left, you see the same log both flat cut and cut on the quarter. Check out the Specifying Veneer section of our website to find out more about the various cuts of veneer that are possible and the looks that you can achieve with each of them.
